My report card as the (interim) member of Youth Advisory Board Member of UN-Habitat 2008-2010



November 2008 

  • At the World Urban Youth Forum of the UN-Habitat, John Anugraha was elected to be on the Youth Advisory Board of the UN-Habitat.
  • Active participation at the World Urban Forum and leading discussions at several sessions
  • Networking with youth across Asia-Pacific and globally to spread the word about WORLD URBAN FORUM & YOUTH FUND opportunities available.

December 2008

At the Conference of Parties (COP14) held in Poznan, Poland, Anugraha John was representing the Indian Youth delegation and had prompted the idea of the Asian Youth Climate Network among various activists that were present.

February 2009

Anugraha John was a speaker at the World Peace Congress held in Bangalore, India on the panel Children’s Right and Youth Activism. Issues related to migrant workers Children, urbanization and other housing related were highlighted.

March 2009 – April 2009

  • GCSD in collaboration with Nina Gregg of the US Coordinator of the Charter of Human Responsibilities team organized the Climate Change and Water Film Festival in ten universities in US which included Harvard, American University, etc. A North-South Dialogue to evaluate the effects of climate change in cities and villages was part of the discussion while empowering the youth to be climate champions was the main mission.
  • John Anugraha actively participated and lobbied with the government officials and other stake holders to bring the youth agenda in the main agenda at the Governing Council meeting in Nairobi, Kenya (GC 22). He played a major role in negotiating and convincing the Sri Lankan government official delegation to present the Draft resolution on strengthening the development of urban young people HSP/GC/22/CRP.4/Rev.1) at GC 22.


June 2009

  • John Anugraha presented a paper at the Local Government Climate Change Leadership Summit in Copenhagen representing the UN-Habitat Youth Advisory Board at the panel ‘Adaptation – Local Government’s are key actors for Adaptation’ on 2nd June 2009
  • Discussions with the Singapore Management University led to an agreement of Business School Students doing an 8 credit course with GCSD focusing on urban migration / migrant workers children as part of their required Business Practicum Program. (Three students later in the month of January 2010 joined the program)

July

  • GCSD organized a Sports and Environmental festival for school Children in Bangalore, India. All schools that participated at this event, ‘Malhar 2009’ were given an orientation and sessions on Rain-water harvesting. Students in these schools were encouraged to implement Rain-Water Harvesting projects
  • GCSD organized with the Forum for a new World Governance (FnWG) an important workshop on Youth and World Governance. About 20 International participants attended the workshop. A paper was written by Anugraha John which is now on the website of FnWG for youth to comment and jointly re-write.

August 2009

John Anugraha was the Co-organizer of the Asian Forum for Cross-Cultural Dialogue which was organized with partners like, Institute of World Literature & Center for Cross-Cultural Center, Peking University, China, University of Mainz, Germany, Global Water Partnership China and GCSD. More than 120 International participants participated. World Eco-culture (WEO) Organization was established during this Forum.


September 2009

  • Anugraha John was invited to initiate as a key participant especially for the dialogue between ‘Young Leaders meet Today’s Leader’ at the 2nd Asia-Pacific Forum for Housing held in Manila, Philippines. At this meeting he was also invited to represent the youth leader from Asia at the Jimmy & Rosalyn Carter Cambodia in November 2009 by Habitat for Humanity Asia office.
  • GCSD was the Co-organizer of the event 4th International Students Peace Festival. Anugraha John facilitated various sessions and was a key youth leader for an emerging India-Pakistan Youth Forum, a platform to network and enhance the relationship of ties as more participants from Pakistan are expected at this Forum but there will also be participants from across the globe. 22 November 2009

October 2009

John Anugraha organized volunteers for the event at the World Habitat Day in Bangalore, India. He was also given the opportunity to speak at this event.

November 2009

Anugraha John with his invitation to the Jimmy & Rosalyn Carter Build project was building houses for the poor in Cambodia. He also initiated dialogue with youth from across the globe but especially Asia for future activities in the continent relating to housing and poverty and development.

January 2010

GCSD in partnership with a local college in Bangalore, India launched the program, WE BUILD 2010. This four-week programme in the summer 2010 is designed as a co-curricular service-learning model, as it connects the theory taught in the school to the application used in the world. It will not only give international exposure to students but also engage them through a labor intensive experience by building houses for the poor communities and an eco-residential school for (state) migrant worker’s children. February 2010

GCSD in collaboration with a Japanese University will organize a 2 week Cross-Cultural Dialogue programme for students visiting from Japan and Indians students in Bangalore, this is also part of the Japan-India Forum. The key themes for this programme are Gender, Poverty and Development. Global citizenship will be the overarching theme.

March 2010

  • GCSD is partnering with Habitat for Humanity for their programme, WOMEN BUILD 2010 to be held from 7th – 17th March 2010. GCSD will organize local volunteers to be part of the project.
